A weighted comparison grid can make a difficult purchase transparent, but only when it follows good requirements and honest evidence. Numbers do not repair vague criteria. The grid should first remove incompatible options, then show how the remaining candidates perform on preferences that matter. Its final score is a decision aid, not a mathematical command.
Apply pass-or-fail conditions first
List the obligations defined before comparison: maximum dimensions, necessary compatibility, essential safety condition, firm budget or required function. Test every candidate against the same evidence. An option that fails an obligation leaves the grid regardless of its strengths elsewhere.
This step prevents a high average from hiding a fatal weakness. A device that does not fit the space cannot compensate with design, and a service unavailable at the address cannot win through price. Keep the reason for each elimination so the shortlist remains explainable.
Choose distinct, observable criteria
Use criteria that represent different aspects of the decision. “Easy to use”, “convenient” and “simple” may count the same experience three times. Replace them with specific observations such as control clarity, setup steps and cleaning time. Five to eight criteria are usually enough for a household comparison.
Define each criterion before scoring. For example, maintenance might include routine minutes, number of parts and availability of instructions. Ownership cost should use the same period and assumptions for every option. A written definition reduces the temptation to change meaning when a favourite performs poorly.
Assign weights from priorities
Distribute one hundred points across the criteria or use a smaller consistent scale. Give the largest weights to outcomes that affect frequent tasks, comfort, reliability or significant cost. Decorative preferences can remain in the grid with lower weight. The total must reflect the buyer’s stated needs, not the amount of information available for each feature.
Set weights before entering product scores whenever possible. Otherwise, knowledge of the candidates may shape priorities unconsciously. Ask whether a five-point change in a weight could plausibly alter the decision. If not, the exact number is less important than the order of priorities.
Create anchored scoring rules
A one-to-five scale works when the levels have meaning. Define one as failing most of the preference, three as meeting the normal need and five as providing a documented, useful advantage. Avoid giving a high score simply because a specification has the largest number. More is valuable only when it improves the intended task.
Record the evidence beside each score: measurement, instruction, observed sequence or documented support term. Use a cautious score for missing evidence and mark it visibly. Decimal precision rarely improves truth; whole numbers with clear notes are easier to audit.
Calculate without hiding trade-offs
Multiply each score by its weight and add the results, using the same formula for every candidate. Show the category scores as well as the total. Two products can reach a similar total through very different strengths, and the pattern may matter more than the small numerical gap.
Keep cost visible in its original unit alongside its score. The same applies to dimensions, runtime or contract duration. Converting every fact into points can hide practical magnitude. The grid summarises evidence; it should not replace it.
Run a sensitivity check
Adjust the most uncertain scores and the two largest weights within a reasonable range. If the winner remains ahead, the decision is robust. If a small change reverses the order, treat the leading options as effectively close and choose through handling, support, availability or another direct observation.
Review any score based on weak evidence. Seeking one missing measurement may be more valuable than expanding the shortlist. A sensitivity check also reveals criteria that appear important in discussion but have almost no effect on the result.
Write the decision in plain language
Finish with a short explanation: which obligations were satisfied, which strengths justified the choice, which compromise was accepted and which uncertainty remains. Store the grid with the date and assumptions, because prices, software support and needs can change.
A useful weighted grid makes judgment visible without pretending to eliminate it. It disciplines the comparison, exposes trade-offs and gives another person enough context to challenge or reproduce the choice. When the highest score conflicts with common sense, inspect the criteria and evidence before trusting the arithmetic.
Make the grid UK-market ready
Enter VAT-inclusive prices in pounds and use the same ownership period for every option. Add criteria that can change practical suitability in the UK: correct model and plug, local service coverage, parts availability, delivery access and a workable support route. Do not award points for a feature that is unavailable to a UK account or requires an omitted subscription.
Keep regional suitability separate from general product quality. An internationally strong product can still fail a mandatory local condition, while a less dramatic option may offer better support and lower replacement friction. Re-run the result with plausible changes to price and weighting; if a tiny adjustment reverses the winner, present the finalists and the trade-off rather than claiming certainty.
